I am a biological anthropologist / evolutionary biologist and hold faculty appointments in Anthropology, Animal Biology, the Program in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation (PEEC), The Carle-Illinois College of Medicine where I served as course director for the Obstetrics and Gynecology course, the Center for African Studies, The Gender and Women in Global Perspective Program, and the Beckman Institute for the Advanced of Science at the University of Illinois. Since 2019, I have served as associate editor for the journals, Microbiome and Animal Microbiome.
Since 2005, my research has focused on understanding comparative host-microbial diversity and dynamics in the Primate Order (Including humans) and larger environs. In addition, for over 25 years I have conducted field studies of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus and Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Ivory Coast and Uganda including behavioral, hormone and microbial analyses to shed light on sexual conflict, adolescent development, and patterns of dispersal. Prior to that, I studied wild lemur biology, genetics and evolution in Madagascar.
I have been fortunate to work with many friends, colleagues and organizations in Uganda over the last 15 years and am dedicated to improving science access and agency in rural Uganda. Having experienced firsthand the challenges of the local medical clinics and hospitals when friends, employees, and I myself needed urgent medical care, and Having lost friends and colleagues to disease (HIV/AIDS, malaria, respiratory disease), I am focused on understanding microbial diversity and dynamics at the human/wildlife interface, with the goal of improving wildlife and human health in Western Uganda and beyond. This One Health surveillance research requires non-invasive collection and analyses of fecal samples from wild primates, humans, and other organismal and environmental microbiota.
With the growing recognition of the large gaps in our understanding of emerging diseases and wildlife/human disease transmission, we conduct surveillance sampling of these complex natural communities and apply next generation sequencing to assess microbial composition, function, and host-microbiome interactions to determine microbial diversity and model pathogen distribution and microbial transmission dynamics to improve global health.
